The versatile pipe product range satisfy Standards for low pressure reticulation/piping, general mechanical and structural applications. For a specific outside diameter these sections have a larger wall thickness than CHS in the Structural Products range. However, the Pipe product range is of a lower strength grade to Structural CHS.Standardised diameters and thicknesses for Pipe products permit industry accepted connections to be readily used in fluid conveyancing applications. Larger wall thicknesses also help to provide longer service life in heavy fluid and wear applications i.e. that encountered in mining operations, slurry and concrete pumping. A galvanized coating and the large wall thickness improves the Pipe’s corrosion resistance in some water reticulation applications.
Application areas:
- Fluid conveyancing (fire sprinkler systems, commercial/domestic plumbing, irrigation systems, heavy fluid, industrial process piping, mechanical and mining services, concrete pumping and slurry applications), structural (residential, commercial and industrial construction, signage, leisure equipment, transport industries, general mechanical, heavy engineering, materials handling, agricultural and fencing).
CHS was the first and still the most common form of hollow section. It is used in a multitude of applications including building construction and other structural and mechanical areas. CHS possess inherent traits such as aesthetics, functionality and engineering efficiencies which have been embraced for decades.
From an architectural perspective the constant clean lines provide a very smooth surface appearance which is expressly exploited in many high-profile applications. The lack of protruding edges on these fully closed sections assists in reduced exposure effects to any environment and also in increased cleanliness from dust and other material build-up.
Application areas:
-
Structural and foundation uses in residential, commercial and industrial construction,
signage, leisure equipment, road furniture, transport industries, mechanical, heavy engineering, mining and resources, process engineering, materials handling, agricultural, fencing and some limited low pressure fluid conveyancing applications.

OneSteel Australian Tube Mills Grade C250L0 steels are fully compliant with AS 1163 and can be readily processed to Australian/New Zealand Standards and/or industry practice for:
- General, mechanical, piping and structural fabrication Rolling/bending member lengths
- Welding
- Galvanizing
- Surface preparation for top coats
- End processing (screwed, roll-groove, swaged).
- CHS
- Pipe (also complies with AS 1074)
- Other sections based on enquiry.
- Minimum Yield Strength: 250 MPa (a measure of how strong the tube is – see Table 1).
- Standard designation: AS 1163 – C250L0 (see definition at the end of this Guide).
- Steelmaking process: Fine-grain continuously-cast practice.
- Product manufacture: Cold-forming and high frequency Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) of steel strip. The cold-forming process enhances the strength, hardness and surface finish of the manufactured product.
-
Chemical composition: See Table 2 which applies to steelmake cast analysis and finished
product analysis. - Carbon Equivalence (CE): 0.25 – see Table 2 for details.
- Welding Code Steel Type: Type 2 (from Table 4.6.1(B) of AS/NZS 1554.1 and Table 4.5.1(B) in AS/NZS 1554.5).
-
Mechanical properties: See Table 1 for tensile test and below for impact test requirements.
For cold-flattening tests, AS 1163 requires deformation to 75% of initial tube depth. - Impact Properties: Satisfies Clauses 15.2 and 16.2 of AS 1163 for Charpy V-Notch impact tests at the test temperature of 0°C (i.e. L0).
